The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is Switzerland’s international cooperation agency within the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). In operating with other federal offices concerned, SDC is responsible for the overall coordination of development activities and cooperation with Eastern Europe, as well as for the humanitarian aid delivered by the Swiss Confederation.
The program in the Mekong region concentrates on rural livelihoods and sustainable use of resources, Good governance and Economic development with emphasis on private sector support.
In late 2006 a new liaison office was opened in Vientiane in order to enable a rapid program development in Laos, which operates now as the regional office. The opening of the office strengthened Switzerland’s good development cooperation with the Laotian government which began in the mid-1990s. One of the highlights of this ten-year partnership is the research project to develop new varieties of rice which has helped Laos to ensure a self-sufficient supply of rice. Another important SDC contribution is the removal of unexploded ordnances which date back to the Vietnam war. The SDC also supports the government-launched reforms of the public administration, of agriculture extension and recently of the agriculture and forestry colleges.
