Helvetas was founded in 1955 as the first private organisation for development co-operation in Switzerland. Helvetas is a denominationally and politically independent association, supported by approximately 38.000 members, more than 40.000 sponsors and 15 regional volunteer groups.
The overseas programme includes the most varied development projects, which are implemented by about 450 local, and 42 Swiss staff members in 18 partner countries. In Switzerland, through its regional groups, Helvetas gives the Swiss population the chance to show its solidarity with development co-operation.
Geographically, the key sectors are rural areas of the poorer countries of Africa, Asia – including Central Asia and the Caucasus – and Latin America.
The program in Laos started in 2001. Helvetas provides support in the setting up and developing a countrywide agriculture extension service, promoting production and marketing of organically produced agricultural products, achieving rural income through sustainable energy and reforming the agriculture and forestry college education.

The Swiss College of Agriculture (SCA) in Zollikofen is part of Bern University of Applied Sciences. It is recognized as a centre of excellence in the agricultural, forestry and food industries, and offers three Bachelor's degree programs that are unique in Switzerland: Agriculture, Forestry and Food Technology. This offering has now been complemented with the Life Sciences Master’s degree program in Applied Agricultural and Forestry Sciences.
Graduates are holistically trained and prepared to take responsibility for nature, humans and resources in their respective fields of professional employment. Thanks to the practical nature of the academic education, the graduates can expect to have excellent career opportunities.
In addition to degree program and further education, the SCA is active in applied research and renders services to its clients in Switzerland and around the world. The projects aim to convert well-established scientific knowledge into practical benefits for farmers, industry and society. The researchers often question traditional standards and test unorthodox approaches. Sustainability is for the SCA more than a slogan. It forms the basis and is at the heart of the degree programs and the projects in agriculture, forestry and the food industry.
